Why are Antioxidants important to your skin and how do they work?
Antioxidants help delay or stop cell damage caused by free radicals (oxidants) that are produced naturally by the body. The body creates antioxidants to fight off viruses and remove toxins from our cells. As we age, our body's ability to create antioxidants begins to slow.
Since antioxidants are the first line of defense, they are crucial to healthy cellular function and slowing down aging. Once we are depleted of antioxidants, the next line of defense for the skin is the production of Melanin. Ever wonder why we get dark spots as we age? This is why!
Antioxidants occur naturally in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate. The most commonly known are flavanols (from chocolate), resveratrol (from wine), and lycopene (from tomatoes).
Other popular antioxidants include vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, E, and catechin - all of which are utilized in Rhonda Allison’s Pro-Youth formulations!
